Title |
A small lead artefact of unidentified function and unknown date |
||
Description |
English: A small lead or lead-alloy artefact of uncertain function and date, probably Medieval to Modern. This object is probably or possibly incomplete but this is uncertain. The artefact has a weight of 1.14g and consists of a thin, 0.9mm, sub-oval lobe of white metal. This lobe has a width of 11.9mm and length of c.13.4mm. An integral sub-rectangular tab projects out from the lower edge, thus increasing the length to 17.6mm. This solid tab has a width of 4.3mm and similar thickness to the rest of the artefact, possibly being marginally thicker. One top corner is twisted and folded back on itself. The terminal appears to be straight edged with no obvious break.
The reverse surface is flat and undecorated, showing evidence of an old fold/bend line. The upper surface is decorated with relief detail, probably with use of a punch-stamp tool. A hollow lozenge is formed, that fills most of the lobe, by a line decorated with closely set diagonal depressions. This represents twisted rope. The field within the lozenge contains a bird, probably a cockrell, left. A small area of damage has occurred to the left of the lobe, on the left corner of the lozenge. Apart from this small area of missing material and a couple of bent areas no other damage is identifiable. Thus the function of this item remains uncertain. One possibility is that this may be the remains of a cloth or bag seal. Compare with PAS records SUR-6A96A8 & NARC-B31093. |
