Title |
A single view of a Post Medieval book clasp. |
||
Description |
English: The object is a possibly Post Medieval book clasp. Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households: Medieval and Post Medieval Finds From Norwich Survey, Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology 58) illustrates a similar example, No. 452 and dates this to the 16th century. Ottaway and Rogers (Ottaway, P. and Rogers, N. 2002 Craft, Industry and Everyday Life: Finds From Medieval York CBA) illustrate an example which closely matches the recorded example, No. 14480. The clasp is made from cast copper alloy. The clasp is a sub-rectangle in plan. One terminal forms a ‘V’ shape with a rivet hole in each arm. The opposite terminal has a central, integral rectangular protrusion, which curls round forming a ‘J’ shape. This forms the clasp element of the fitting. There are two other rivet holes on the clasp, one near the clasp, the other in the centre. The decoration consists of a ring and dot design around the central rivet hole. The clasp is bent forming a right angle in profile. The surface of the clasp has red copper corrosion.The clasp measures 25.21mm long and 22.69mm wide. It weighs 3.4g. |
