Summary
[edit]DescriptionA sign for the Polly Road - geograph.org.uk - 60545.jpg |
English: A sign for the Polly Road. This sign has appeared overnight. This quiet country lane has always been known as The Polly (or Pollie) Road but why was the sign needed and why does it lead to 'Curragh'. It leads to a broad area of land which most people call 'The Curraghs'. The name Polly comes from a nearby pool of water (originally two adjacent pools) known as The Pollies. This is either a corruption of the Manx gaelic Poill or Poyll (meaning pool), or somehow relates to the nearby hamlet called The Dollagh, which in turn is thought to derive from Dhoo and Lough meaning dark pool... |
