Summary
[edit]DescriptionA sheela-na-gig - St Mary's Stoke Sub Hamdon - geograph.org.uk - 1565086.jpg |
English: A sheela-na-gig - St Mary's Stoke Sub Hamdon Two chancel corbels with carved figures - the one on the right is a sheela-na-gig which is a female figure although in shadow is showing off her genitalia. There are several theories why they appeared in the carvings of early churches. One is the intent to keep evil spirits away and another is a warning against the sin of lust.
