Title
A silver penny of Coenwulf of Mercia or forging coin of his realm
Description
English: A silver Saxon penny either minted by an illiterate moneyer of Coenwulf of Mercia (r. 796–821) or someone forging coins of his reign. Obverse depicts a bust in profile facing right. The inscription appears to modern eyes as [ ]VWCC / REX although the letter W was not yet in use and the full inscription on better specimens is REX COENVVCC for REX COENVVLF. The reverse depicts a six-pointed star within a circle. The inscription here +DER·T[ ]VV for +DER·THIVV on better specimens (1). Credited to the moneyer Wihtræd / Wihtred / Uhtred in the Kingdom of East Anglia (possibly Ipswich) by taking the inscription in reverse. Part of the inscription is missing due to damage around the edge.

This coin is of Naismmith type E12.4. North no. 367.1 (Cn. 105)
