Ifthe fundus is brought down posteriorly, then a piece of sterile gauze should beinserted anteriorly to protect the peritoneal cavity against soiling. The manner in which the uterus can be brought down most convenientlj^is by means of the cats-paw retractors, as indicated in the plate. The ovaryand tube on one side are then brought forward into the wound by means of SURGERY OF THE FEMALE PELVIS 631 forceps placed upon the broad ligament, or by digital manipulation. Then apair of heavy, long-jawed compression forceps is applied to the broad ligamentbeyond the ovary and tube from above downwards, in order to avoid theureters.
