Title
a medieval buckle with buckle plate
Description
English: A cast copper alloy, single loop, rectangular buckle with separate buckle plate, dating from AD1350-1500. The buckle has a single concave moulding on each side and two smaller mouldings on the outside edge separated by a small, grooved pin rest. The knops formed by the moulding on the outer corners have two small grooves and those on the inner corners a single groove each. The pin bar is narrowed and offset. The plate consists of a rectangular strip of metal folded around the pin bar and notched to take the pin, which is now missing. The outer side of the plate is decorated with a border of small, punched dots containing a pattern of swirling lines, also of punched dots. A single, copper alloy rivet remains in place in the centre of the inner end of the plate. The buckle has a dark green patina. It is 35.6mm long, 18.8mm wide and 4.8mm thick. It weighs 4.49gm.
