Title
a medieval asymmetrical buckle with zoomorphic moulding
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy, double loop asymmetrical buckle, dating from AD1300-1400. It consists of two loops; a smaller, rectangular loop, the inner edge of which is bent, and a larger, D-shaped loop. The outer edge of the larger loop is decorated with a zoomorphic moulding in the shape of a dog's head, which carries traces of gilding. The buckle has a dark brown patina. It is 18.8mm long, 15.9mm wide and 5mm thick. It weighs 1.7gm.

This artefact is similar to a group of buckles from Meols with similar decoration (number 637 etc.). It is not certain that they are buckles as none has yet been found with a pin and they may be a form of strap loop. Similar buckles/strap loops have been recorded by the PAS, see for example, BERK-F8A072 and SWYOR-3CBD88.
