Beginning forty-eighthours after the operation, a full-sized steel sound shouldbe passed through the stricture a few times at intervalsof three or four days, and then at longer intervals, as intreatment by dilation. To render the result permanent,it is usually necessary to continue the occasional use ofthe sound in the same manner as after treatment bydilation. When strictures of a calibre larger than No. 18 or 20require cutting, the Otis urethrotome (Fig. 52) is prob-ably the best instrument in use.
