The poem inscribed by the screen at the left translates: Two Guardian Figures: their first laugh is for the plum tree by the gate. This verse alludes to the male customers two companionsa courtesan and a male prostitute. Masanobu was a talented poet who enjoyed visual and verbal parodies, and his intelligence and unconventional humor set him apart from his contemporaries."
