Title
a late medieval buckle plate
Description
English: Part of a cast, copper alloy buckle plate dating from the late medieval to early post-medieval period, 1450-1550AD. It is rectangular in shape and is of sheet copper alloy, folded over at the edges. There is a shallow groove around the edge creating a cartouche, in which is a Gothic letter M on a background of very small lines of rocker arm work. There is some old damage to one side and one edge of the plate. It has a smooth, dark brown patina. It is 30.7mm long, 20.6mm wide and 2.1mm thick. It weighs 2.38gm. A similar plate is illustrated in Griffiths, Philpott and Egan, Meols: The Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast, plate 24, number 1617.
