ntage, through the kindness of RobertEmbleton, Esq., of having the opportunity of deriving our figureand description from undoubted examples of this fish, fromLoch Grannock, in the Highlands of Scotland; where or inwhich neighbourhood alone it has hitherto been found in theUnited Kingdom; and where, as well as even in Siberia, itinhabits places subject to a greater degree of cold than doothers of this family. In Norway it has been observed to goup the course of rivers more freely than other Chars; and itsrange in that direction is higher than that of the Salmon, orindeed than any other fish; for it approaches within two thousandfeet of the line of perpetual snow. Linnteus found them caught,together with Pikes, in a river in Lycksele, Lapland, by fishermenin the month of June. It is said to shed its spa^vn in Septemberand October. The example described, which was a female from LochGrannock, was seven inches and a half in length; the shapeplump, deep, the belly protuberant; forehead a little rounded;eye moderate; jaws equal, mystache extending to the hindmostborder of the eye; small incurved teeth in it and the jaws,round the palate and on the tongue; in the latter Avidclyseparate, in two rows; none seen in the vomer.
