| Description | As you can see, it is raining quite heavily now. But armed with an umbrella each, my guide Alena and I managed to climb onto the wall. And what a wide wall it was! (pictures follow). Here are some of the ancient structures around the wall. Alena tole me something about the buildings you see up front but I could not record them in my mind as I was distracted by the rain and rather disappointed that the bicycle ride had had to be canceled. Standing in the city center of Xi'an -- capital city of Shaanxi Province in northwest China -- the ancient Xi'an city wall is the only fortification in China that still stands as an unbroken rectangular circuit. There is a flanking tower every 120 mtr. The flanking towers were built to allow soldiers to see enemies trying to climb the wall. The distance between the flanking towers is within the range of arrows fired from either side. This allowed soldiers to protect the entire wall without exposing themselves to the enemy. There are 98 flanking towers; each has a sentry building on top of it. (Xi'an, Shaanxi, China, May 2017) |
