Description

Nicosia, Cyprus. When Turkish forces invaded Cyprus in 1974 between 140,000 and 200,000 Greek Cypriots had to flee from their homes in the North of the island, and have never been able to return or receive any compensation.

The island remains split into the Turkish-occupied North and the Greek South.

The city of Nicosia lies in the middle and is also split. Looking at my photo, look to the bottom-right of what was once a busy street and see a line of white oil drums and barbed wire which is the border line. United Nations forces still patrol the de facto border.

In the 45 years since the invasion the Turkish and Cypriot authorities have never been unable to reach a settlement.
