Like the West Indies and theHawaiian Islands, the Philippines are portions of mountain chainsin the sea. They form part of a still greater chain, reaching north-ward to the Japanese Islands and beyond. Throughout the archipelago earthquakes are common and sometimesvery destructive to property and to life; for instance, the earthquake of1863 destroyed a large part of Manila.
