Title
A Post Medieval fragment polychrome tin-glazed (Delftware) tile dating AD1571-1620.
Description
English: A Post Medieval fragment polychrome tin-glazed (Delftware) tile dating AD1571-1620. The fragment includes one corner of the decorated 'medallion' style tile. Originally the tile was square, only one corner remains now. Similar examples within the Museum of London collections depict natural scenes of animals and birds stood on grass. This tile has a similarly natural scene within a circular border of blue, white and purple (manganese) concentric rings against a blue background with three white lozenge-shaped petals in the corner. Ian Betts notes: the blue and purple circular bands suggest it is from the Aldgate pottery and tile factory in London. It would therefore date from 1571 to c. 1615/ c. 1620.

Dimensions: thickness: 16.64mm; weight: 98.80g.

Identification by Jackie Keily, Curator, Museum of London and Ian Betts, Building Material Specialist, Museum of London Archaeology Service.
