Title |
A Post Medieval copper alloy thimble with maker’s mark dating 1520-1620. |
||
Description |
English: A Post Medieval copper alloy thimble with maker's mark dating 1520-1620. The indentations are circular and have been hand stamped in a spiral pattern radiating from the peak of the thimble. Spiral patterns became known in the 16th century. Below the indentations there is a single linear border just above the rim. The majority of the indentations completely perforate the wall of the thimble. The walls of this thimble are thin measuring 0.55mm in thickness. At the end of the indentations there is a maker's mark of a trefoil with stem. The shape of thimble is slightly distorted due to crushing.
Dimensions: length: 20.71mm; thickness: 0.55mm; diameter: 16.64mm; weight: 2.38g.
Holmes (1988:3) notes that thimbles with maker's marks appear to have been imported mostly from Nuremberg where, "under the ordinances of the Guild of Thimble-makers, all thimbles and sewing rings were required to carry the mark of the master who made them." He continues that thimbles with makers' marks normally date from 1520-1620.
