A Post Medieval copper alloy incomplete button (late 16th – early 17th century). LON-016786 |

Description |
English: A Post Medieval copper alloy incomplete button (late 16th – early 17th century). This is a hollow, spherical button decorated with gilding and enamel, only part of the loop for attachment is present, the outer edge is missing. The button is highly decorated with an ornate cast pattern: the attachment loop forms the centre of a six petalled flower with pellets around the edges of the petals. Below this is a circular band of pellets. The decoration on the lower two thirds of the button is divided into six lozenge-shaped sections meeting in a point at the peak of the button; there is an irregular gap at the point. Each of these sections has the same geometric lozenge-shaped pattern interspersed with pellets. There is a large amount of gilding still remaining and areas of dark possibly black background enamelling are visible. There is some surface dirt that is obscuring the details.
Dimensions: Diameter: 13.74mm; length: 15.21mm; weight: 2.72g. No exact parallel could be found, dating confirmed by Hazel Forsyth, Senior Post Medieval Curator, Museum of London. |
