Description |
English: 1598 portrait catalogued as "a member of the Brereton family" with coat of arms upper right. But these are the arms of Raleigh (Gules, seven fusils in bend argent) not the arms of Brereton (Argent, two bars sable). See similar painting apparently of this sitter (Sir William Brereton, 1st Baron Brereton (1550 – 1 October 1631),) in 1579 aged 28 File:William Brereton 1579.jpg Therefore prima facie this is a portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh (1552/4-1618), whose approximate date of birth 1552/4 corresponds with the inscription on the base of the column shown at left Ann(o) D(omi)ni 1598 Aetatis Sua(e) 47 ("(painted) in the year of Our Lord 1598 of his age 47"), giving an exact birth date of 1551. The facial features however seem to correspond to those of both men, as shown in other portraits. |
