Title
A Medieval copper alloy strap end
Description
English: Complete copper alloy double sheet strap end, dating to the Medieval period. This strap end consists of two narrow, long tongue-shaped plates, which taper to a point, with one circular rivet connecting the plates together near the wider straight edge. It is unclear from the images if this example is cast or beaten from copper sheet. This rivetted connection would have connected the strap end to a belt. There is no distinctive decoration, although there are two slight ridges running the length of the top surface which could be due to the pinching together of the plates to create the strap end. Although it is unclear from these photographs whether or not this two-piece strap end possesses side-strip spacers to maintain its shape, this particular type is paralleled most closely with those found in Egan and Pritchard (1991, Figure 89, esp. Nos. 626, 631). For PAS examples refer to: BH-B31D27, LVPS-E84897, SF-8018D4, DENO-627BE2.
