Title
A Medieval buckle with integral forked spacer.
Description
English: The object is an oval shaped buckle frame with an integral forked spacer, made of cast copper alloy. Egan and Pritchard comment that this type of buckles were popular in the mid 14th to early 15th centuries.

The frame is a sub-oval shape, and is bevelled in profile. There is a protruding triangular notch at the apex of the loop. The strap bar is off-set and constricted for the pin. The reverse of the frame is flat.

The forked spacer is formed by two symmetrical arms which taper to a point, and are rectangular in section. The upper interior edge of the arms is stepped.

The pin is made from cast copper alloy, possibly the same alloy as the frame as the surface colouring and condition is similar. The pin tapers to a blunt point. The opposite terminal is curled around the bar.

The surface of the buckle has developed a brown patina. It weighs 10.24g, and measures 54.4mm long, and 30.7mm wide.
