Title
A Medieval Seal Matrix
Description
English: An incomplete lead seal matrix dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1200-1300). The matrix is roughly circular in plan with a flat face and flat reverse. At the centre of the matrix is an incised eight-pointed star set within a circle. The legend is inscribed around the central star in retrograde (anti-clockwise). The inscription reads: + S' ADEB ON E[...], translating as 'Seal of Adeb from E[...]'. The reverse of the seal has a central line or scratch running across the diameter, as well as a few other minor pits and scratches. The seal is chipped in various places around its edge. The object has a light brown patina.

Ahmet (2020) notes that this type of matrix, with a simple non-heraldic design and crude personal inscription, fits with a group of commonly reported simple lead personal seal matrices dating to the 13th to mid 14th centuries.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 23.97mm in diameter, 2.51mm in thickness and 8.09g in weight.
