Description

A small patch of reserved forest / planted forest full of Eucalyptus trees is a popular place for us birders. This one is a few kms away from a thicker forest, but separated by many open fields. The tall Eucalyptus trees seems to attract many Shrike species - both the Large Cuckooshrike and the Black headed Cuckooshrike can be seen at that place much of the time along with the Common Woodshrike and Long Tailed Shrikes. One thing they all share is the diet which is very similar - insects, caterpillars, spiders and other arthropods that are found in abundance in that area.

The Large Cuckooshrike is medium sized bird and quite an active one too. We sighted it chasing a White-Browed Fantail that was foraging in the same area.

It is tough to shoot high in the canopy, but this is the best shot of the bird for me till date. They are easier to shoot on hilly areas that have a sloping forest, but this was not such a place.
