An internship at NSF provides many exciting opportunities, including, on July 21, 2011, a visit to hear from two of the key players on science policy on Capitol Hill. NSF's "Summer Scholars"--many of whom are interested in science policy and the impact of science research on society--met with Dr. Ian Simon, science policy advisor for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), and with Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ), one of a small number of members of Congress with science backgrounds. Holt (pictured, in suit), a physicist, spoke to the interns on the Capitol steps about the need to improve science literacy among members of Congress and American citizens. He also emphasized the need for STEM majors to improve their communication skills so they will be better at sharing science processes and results with broader audiences. Simon (not pictured) talked to the students about how positions in academia and think tanks led him to his work in Congress. Between the meetings, the interns toured the U.S. Capitol.
