English: ASC AS3000 cassette deck (1982). Since the early 1970s, ASC was a small German manufacturer of reel-to-reel recorders based on Braun mechanisms (similar to Brabus-Mercedes relationship). In the early 1980s they ventured into high-end cassette market. The very first AS3000 model relied on a three-motor Papst Multidrive mechanism and High-Com noise reduction (promising compatibility with Dolby B for playback), which was soon dropped in favor of industry-standard Dolby B/C. The campy green power button is clearly a homage to Braun. Reviews were usually positive, but stated that the ASC decks were far behind the level of true "dragon slayers". Good, but not the best in trade, and the company had no resources to advance them further. ASC soon abandoned consumer market, moving first into broadcast equipment and then to data processing and security - where it still operates as of 2023. |
