[edit]DescriptionAS15-98-13311 and 13325 zodiacal light.jpg |
English: This image is two photographs taken by Command Module Pilot Al Worden early in the Apollo 15 mission from lunar orbit. Both show the zodiacal light as a glow above the horizon, readily visible due to the moon's lack of atmosphere. At left (AS15-98-13311) the lunar far side is in darkness and the sun is just below the horizon. The two brightest points of light are the star Regulus and the planet Mercury, and other stars are mostly within the constellation Leo. As the spacecraft orbited (heading west) the sun rose above the horizon. At right (AS15-98-13325) the lunar near side is illuminated by earthshine and the sun is below the horizon. The camera is pointed "behind" the spacecraft to the east. Venus is the bright object close to the horizon at the end of a streak on the photograph, and the two brightest stars (Castor and Pollux) of the constellation Gemini are visible. |
