Summary
[edit]DescriptionAFM (3015662752).jpg | AFM members with a red poppy in their caps. In the weeks before Remembrance Day in Britain, Malta and other Commonwealth countries, volunteers sell artificial red poppies. The poppies recall the poppy fields of Flanders, a historic region that now forms parts of Belgium, France, and The Netherlands. Many soldiers died in battles fought in Flanders during World War I. John McCrae, a Canadian physician and poet, eulogized them in a poem titled “In Flanders Fields,” which begins “In Flanders fields the poppies blow/Between the crosses, row on row,...” . Although there were no Maltese involved in the carnage which took place in these battles we also commemorate the bravery of those who died in battle. During World War I the Maltese were involved in Salonika and Gallipoli and some Maltese even lost their lives there. It commemorates both World Wars and if in the First World War the Maltese only suffered secondary suffering during the Second World War they were direly tested and hundreds died buried under the rubble or serving on the anti-aircraft gung ringing the Maltese Islands. - MALTA 2008 |
