British WW2 era Heavy Infantry Tank. The original A20 Churchill was designed and built by Harland & Wolff in nearby Belfast. This is a much later A22 Churchill Mk.VII, which was a major redesign and was wider and had more armour than its predecessors as well as having a 75mm gun. This example was donated to Carrickfergus Borough Council by the Ministry of Defence in 2013. It was previously marked as 'T251536 / H', although that hasn't helped me to track down its prior history! Restored by a combination of keen amateurs, Army Reservists, experts from the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland and young people from the Hydebank Centre, it went on display in June 2014 at the Carrickfergus Marine Gardens, Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, UK. 15th September 2018 |
