Description

Portland Canal near 18th St.: Workers pouring concrete foundations for overlook atop old 18th St. Bridge pier. Concrete is mixed on the ground and hauled up in buckets. The pier was built in 1856 as the pivot pier for a swing span over the canal, which at that time was only 64 feet wide. See Leland R. Johnson and Charles E. Parrish, Triumph at the Falls: The Louisville and Portland Canal (Louisville: U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, 2007) pp. 98-101.
