Description 80-G-78613: Attack on German submarine, U-527, by TBF-1 aircraft from USS Bogue (CVE 9), by pilot, Lieutenant Junior Grade R.L. Sterns, at 14:07 G.C.T. Four MK 47 depth charges were dropped and the submarine was sunk. USS Clemson (AVD 4) was sent to the scene and three hours later picked up thirteen survivors; the Captain, two officers, two non-commissioned officers and eight enlisted men. Shown: Survivors floating in wake and air bubbles of sunken submarine. Incident #3851. Released July 23, 1943. Official U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
