Summary
[edit]Description80-G-707341 (27612389281).jpg | 80-G-707341: Navy Gunners will soon test their skill against pilotless aircraft flying near the speed of sound and maneuvering the modern jet fighters. The targets (known as KDM-1) will be an improved version of the Gorgon IV. A radio controlled drone which is powered by a ram-jet engine. In this artist’s conception, the KDM-1 is flying an oval course while gunners of the surface crafts are trying to shoot it down. When its fuel is exhausted, the target drone releases a parachute end and floats to the water. The new target is an all metal high-wing monoplane, which is being built by the Glenn L. Martin Company at Baltimore, Maryland. Photograph released August 30, 1949. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/06/14). |
