Shatru malleswaram Sathru malleswaram Pallava Hindu temple Mahendravarman Dalavanur

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This 7th-century rock-cut temple is southeast of Gingee, on way towards Villupuram (State highway 4). Located north of the village Thalavanur (Dalavanur, Dhalavanur) that is well connected by a rural road, it is set in rocks surrounded by farms.

The temple is more sophisticated than the nearby Mandagapattu built also in 7th-century. It has more intricately carved facade for entrance, a full standard mandapa with pillars. Several faces have inscriptions. The sanctum has dvarapalas, and inside is a rock-cut Shiva linga. The pillar style is early Pallava. Outside is a marble book-shaped inscribed surface, colonial era, partly damaged from weathering.

The temple has four significant inscriptions. The above is a Tamil inscription, likely from the 9th- or 10th-century (it is on two parts, the second part on a different face). The older inscription is from 7th-century in Sanskrit written in Grantha script (in it is the phrase Satrumalla, the basis for this temple's name).
