Description

Accession: 77-229-C Uniform, Officer, Dress, White, Jacket, Waves, 23.25"L x 16"W

Dress White Jacket, Officer Female, Waves, "Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service." Sleeve insignia are for the rank of Captain.

Collection of Captain Mildred H. McAfee, (Horton) USNR. 1900-1994 Mildred McAfee was President of Wellesley College in 1936. She took a leave of absence from that position and became the first female line officer in the Navy on the 3rd August 1942. She was commissioned a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve, she became the Director of the Navy's newly established Women's Reserve. She was promoted to Captain in November 1943 and continued on active duty until February 1946,when she returned to the Presidency of Wellesley College.
