Summary

[edit]
Description

DB Schenker's class 66s (JT42CWR) numbers 66020 and 66086 in English, Welsh and Scottish Railway maroon with zigzag gold band working 6O32 hauling 21 loaded IHA bogie steel coil carriers in the fading light, more dull than usual due to Saharan dust, on 3 April 2014. The identities of the GE IHA bogie steel coil carrier wagons where known are 37 84 4667 002-1, 37 84 4667 037-4, 37 84 4667 169-5, 37 84 4667 096-0 and 37 84 4667 101-8. 66020 and 66086 were both built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division, London, Ontario, Canada 66020 in 1998 and 66086 in 1999. 66020 was unloaded from the Heavy Lift Ship MV "Fairmast" at Newport Docks on 28 October 1998 and 66086 was unloaded from MV "Stellamare" on 12 April 1999. A similar set of wagons was photographed by Tarek Marouane at La Chapell D'Armentieres France returning to the UK from Maubeuge being hauled by class 66 number 062 on 5 April 2014 (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/118798932@N04/13775639925/">www.flickr.com/photos/118798932@N04/13775639925/</a>).

The steel flow from South Wales to Maubeuge (France) and to Broekman (Holland) stopped running through the Channel tunnel at the end of November 2015. The flow to Maubeuge was cancelled as the cold mill which produced this material was mothballed as part of the Tata Steel strip downsizing programme. Instead Maubeuge is supplied from Tata Steels Limuiden plant (Holland). 2 grades of steel were also supplied by Tata Steel to Broekman Group to make oil drums. With one grade being sourced from elsewhere the remaining 700 tonnes per week of the second grade was not sufficient to run a block train.
