| Description |
English: Steam locomotive 60163 Tornado on the level crossing across the High Street in Poole, Dorset. Despite appearances, she's actually going backwards, attached to a rake of 12 coaches carrying around 500 passengers, with a diesel locomotive pulling the whole lot from the other end. This was the return trip of The Purbeck Tornado charter, which was Tornado's first visit to the Swanage Railway, a heritage steam line in the Purbeck District of Dorset. Having departed London Victoria station in the morning, after a water stop at Northam, the train arrived at Swanage around lunchtime. For this return journey however, because there are no suitable turning facilities at Swanage, Tornado had to be hauled backwards like this as far as Southampton, where she could then take over for the leg back to London, terminating in London Waterloo rather than Victoria. |
