English: Manual spring balance from the manufacturer Hermann GmbH in Remscheid. The scales were probably (also) intended for the British market. It can be suspended from the top of the scale with a hook. The goods to be weighed are suspended at the bottom from a flat rod with a hook located in the scale, which is pulled out of the scale by the weight of the goods to be weighed. There is a small marker at the upper end of the rod which can be used to measure the weight of the item being weighed.
At the top of the scale is a ring to hang it on a hook. Underneath is an engraved fish - the manufacturer's logo. Below this is the lettering ‘POCKET BALANCE’ and below that the scale on which the weight of the item to be weighed can be read: In the centre is a marker that is pulled down further the heavier the weight. To the left of this is the scale in kilos, to the right is the scale in British pounds (LBS). The maximum weight is 50 kilos. There is a line for each kilo on the left-hand scale. There is a number for all even kilo weights. The scale on the right-hand side works in the same way, with the numbers shown in steps of four. The inscription ‘MADE IN GERMANY’ is located below the scales. At the lower end of the scale is the aforementioned rod with a hook for attaching the item to be weighed. This scale can still be purchased today (2024) with purely metric scales. |
