Title |
4; Medieval buckle plate |
||
Description |
English: A rectangular, copper alloy buckle plate dating from the Medieval period. The plate has a raised border; in the cartouche thus formed are two draped, female figures in relief. The figures stand facing each other, one facing half right and the other half left. Each has one hand on her hip and the other down by her side. The hands held downwards may be clasped together. There is a mounting rivet with a raised domed head at each corner; all four rivets remain in place. There is evidence that this may have been part of a larger artefact: there are two small pieces of broken metal protruding from the left-hand side. These look to form the hinges of the plate with the buckle frame, containing a hole or slot for the buckle pin. The plate has a light green patina. It is 28.2mm long, 25.2mm wide, and 6.5mm thick. It weighs 10.87gm. A similar figurative example located on the data base is NMS-FB5D44. A further close example can be seen in Egan and Pritchard. 1991. Dress Accessories p. 111, no. 500. |
