Na mitoloxía grega, Caronte (en grego antigo Χάρων Khárôn, ‘brillo intenso’) era o barqueiro do Hades, o encargado de guiar as sombras errantes dos defuntos recentes dun lado ao outro do río Aqueronte se tiñan un óbolo para pagar a viaxe, razón pola cal na Antiga Grecia os cadáveres soterrábanse cunha moeda baixo a lingua. Aqueles que non podían pagar tiñas que vagar cen anos polas ribeiras do Aqueronte, até que Caronte accedía a levalos sen cobrar. Aínda que con frecuencia se di que transitaba polo río Estigia, como suxire Virxilio na súa Eneida (libro VI, 369), segundo a maioría das fontes incluíndo a Pausanias (x.28) e máis tarde Dante (Inferno) o río que realmente transitaba Caronte era o Aqueronte. Caronte era o fillo de Érebo e Nix. Represéntase como un ancián fraco e berrón de roupaxes escuras e con anteface (ou, en ocasións, como un demo alado cun martelo dobre) que elexía aos seus pasaxeiros entre a xente que se amontoaba na orela do Aqueronte, entre aqueles que merecían un enterro adecuado e podían pagar a viaxe (entre un e tres óbolos). Obra realizada en bronce del orensano Ramon Conde situada frente a la rampa que da acceso a la Torre de Hercules. Destaca la fisonomia de un supuesto rostro masculino al que sustenta un cuerpo con atributos de mujer. Antiguamente en Grecia se les ponia una moneda debajo de la lengua a los muertos para que se cobrara este individuo de la mitologia. |
