English: Northrop P-61B-16-NO 'Black Widow', s/n 42-39626 at Fritzlar AAF Station (30 Km SW Kassel), Germany, 1946. S/n 42-39626 was one of a few W-Gun Turret. The USAAF 417th Night Fighter Squadron was based at Giebelstadt Airfield (Y-90) 24 April 1945 - 21 May 1945.
The factory-new Northrop P-61B 'Black Widow', which had only been delivered to the 417th Night Fighter Squadron in March 1945, were transferred from St. Dizier Airfield in France to Giebelstadt, south of Würzburg, shortly after the capture of Giebelstadt airfield by the US 12th Armored Division on April 24, 1945. Combat missions were flown in support of the advancing US Army to the south, including at the bridgeheads on the Danube in the Dillingen and Ulm areas. The 417th NFS left Giebelstadt again on May 21, 1945, and flew its P-61 to Biblis Airfield (Y-78), SW Darmstadt. The ground crew followed with their equipment by road march. Further stationing locations followed: (1) AAF Station Braunshardt b. Klein-Gerau (Y-72), from 26.06. - 08.08.1945. (2) AAF Station Kassel/Rothwesten (R-12), from 09.08.1945 - 09.04.1946. (3) AAF Station Fritzlar (Y-86), from 10.04. - 19.08.1946. (4) AAF Station Schweinfurt (R-25), from 20.08. - 09.11.1946. The 417th Night Fighter Squadron was disbanded in Schweinfurt in early Nov. 1946, most of the aircraft, probably 12 to 15, were scrapped at the Schweinfurt and Giebelstadt airfields.
