A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield blazoned: Vert, a demi-dinosaur (Tyrannosaurus) rampant couped Argent, eyed Gules, langued Azure holding in its sinister claw a sword erect of the second, enflamed Proper. Attached below the shield a Silver scroll inscribed "BY FORCE AND VALOR" in Black letters. Symbolism The monstrous awe-inspiring, ferocious appearing dinosaur, with its scaly armored hide and dangerous tail capable of destroying everything in its path, is symbolic of the destroying functions of the organization, which is further enhanced by the flaming sword, representative of the zeal of the personnel in the performance of their duties. Background The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 40th Armored Regiment on 9 January 1943. It was redesignated for the 40th Tank Battalion on 22 November 1943. The insignia was redesignated for the 40th Armor Regiment on 27 March 1958. It was redesignated for the 40th Cavalry Regiment effective 16 October 2005. |
