Description
English: 330-PS-8264 (USN 1009748): Airmen load food and supplies onboard ZPG-2 airship at South Weymouth, Massachusetts, in preparation for the long flight, March 13, 1957. – Master caption: U.S. Navy ZPG-2 airship, now on extended nonstop flight over the Atlantic, broke the existing airship record for non-refueled flight of 200 hours, 12 minutes. The airship, whose lengthy flight is being made for the purpose of testing and evaluating the all-weather capabilities of airships for use in airborne early warning and anti-submarine defense systems was in the vicinity of the Virgin Islands at the time the new record was established. Before touching down, the airship probably will set a new unofficial distance record for airships. During the Atlantic flight, which started at South Weymouth, Massachusetts, at 6:32 (EST) March 4, the airship has passed Portugal, the Canary Islands, the American Coast and Cape Verde Islands. The ship is commanded by Commander Jack R. Hunt, USNR. It carried a fourteen-man crew. On board is Commander Ronald W. Hoel, USN, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Development Squadron Unit, who is co-pilot and navigator. (1/29/2015).
