Description
English: 330-PS-8041 (USN 694641): The U.S. Navy’s first helicopter assault carrier, USS Thetis Bay (CVHA-1) was placed in commission on July 20, 1956, at San Francisco, California, Naval Shipyard, and her home port Long Beach, California. Thetis Bay, which sent in for conversion in April 1955, was converted to exploit the improved helicopters to be used by the U.S. Marine Corps in amphibious landing operations. Thetis Bay can carry 20 HR2S to 22-passenger Sikorsky helicopters or 40 HRS 10-passenger Sikorsky helicopters. Thetis Bay has a complement of 700 officers and men Navy crew and approximately 1,000 U.S. Marine troops.
