| Description | 330-PSA-214-63 (USN 823639): McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Rear Admiral James R. Reedy, USN, Commander of the Navy’s Antarctic Support Forces, takes the controls of a specially equipped C-130 “Hercules” during his history-making, “non-stop” flight from Capetown, South Africa, to McMurdo Station, October 1, 1963. The ski-equipped Navy “Hercules” made the transpolar flight in 14 hours and 31 minutes. Special 3,600 gallon interior fuel tanks were installed in the aircraft for the flight, giving the plane a total of 9,600 gallons of fuel (enough for 17 hours of flight) and an added load of 10,000 pounds over its normal take-off weight. Commander George R. Kelly, USN, Commanding Officer of Air Development Squadron Six, is the co-pilot, (right), and Claude C. Stanley, Aviation Machinist’s Mate, USN, is at the flight-engineer’s panel.
