Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PS-3292-1: Bomb Explosion onboard USS Oriskany (CV 34). An explosion occurred on the flight deck of USS Oriskany on March 6, 1953, as a Navy “Corsair” of VF-874 returned from a strike mission over the North Korean supply center. The Corsair, piloted by Lieutenant Edwin Kummer landed onboard with a bomb which had failed to release. Upon landing the bomb dislodged from its wing position, bounced twice and exploded on the flight deck. Airman Thomas McGraw was taking motion pictures of carrier landings, photographed this landing and subsequent bomb explosion which killed him. Scenes from this motion picture recovered from the camera show the bomb bouncing along the deck and exploding, March 13, 1953. (4/28/2015).
