Summary
[edit]Description330-PS-326 (USN 707777) (19946208701).jpg | 330-PS-326 (USN 707777): Navy’s New Eight-Blades Contra-Rotating Aircraft Propeller’s. One of the largest aircraft propellers ever developed for the Navy in an experimental eight-bladed contra-rotating installation for use with gas turbine engines of over 6,000 horse-power. The huge propeller was built for the Navy by the Hamilton Standard Division, United Aircraft Corporation at their East Hartford, Connecticut, plant and has successfully completed 400 hours of testing. Further testing will be conducted by the Navy. The blades are 14 feet in diameter on this new propeller. Testing has been carried out with the propeller installed on a conventional piston engine, the Pratt and Whitney Wasp Major. This was the first eight-blade dual-rotation propeller developed for the Navy, and is part of the Navy’s continuing development program of turbo-propeller engines in the country. The new propeller consists of two four-bladed propellers one placed in front of the other on a dual shaft and geared to turn in opposition direction. This eliminates the “torque” effect of propeller driven aircraft. Photograph released June 14, 1950. (7/22/2015). |
