| Description | 330-PS-322 (USN 707764): New Navy Carrier Plane “Skyshark” Undergoes Initial Flight Tests. A powerful new Navy carrier-type attack plane, designed to combine the high speed of jet propulsion with the fast takeoff performance of conventional propeller-driven aircraft, is undergoing initial flight tests at the Douglas El Segundo, California, plant. Designated XA2D and named “Skyshark”, the plane has built for the Navy by the Douglas Aircraft Corporation. It is powered by the Navy-sponsored Allison turboprop engine. The “Skyshark’s” 5,500-horsepower twin-turbine engine, built for the Navy by the Allison Division of General Motors, develops more horsepower or takeoff than any other U.S. engine is that for normal cruising. The engine can operate on one of the twin-turbines alone, thus increasing the range of the aircraft while carrying a power reserve for emergencies. Equipped with folding wings and tailhook assembly for carrier operations, the “Skyshark” my be armed with a variety of airborne weapons, including rockets, bombs, and aerial torpedoes slung from racks.
