Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PS-3129 (46025AC): Air Force Develops New “Flying Lung”. Victims of lung disease can now be wafted quickly and easily to any point in the country by either aircraft or ambulance, thanks to a device recently constructed at the U.S. Air Force School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. This device called the “Flying Lung” is a portable respirator powered by an ingeniously devised power unit operated from either a plane’s electrical system or a portable 24 volt battery. The body tank, approximately six feet long and less than two feet deep is lightweight. Two men can carry it quite easily with a patient inside. Designed by Captain Joseph F. Thomashefaki and Dr. Syrrel S. Wilkes, the “Flying Lung” went from the drawing board to a physical reality in three weeks. Actual construction was supervised by Mr. F.V. Garbich, head of the school’s Research Shop. Field tests with volunteers and actual patients have proven the worth of the lung. The heart of the portable lung in the pressure and pump designed and built by the School of Aviation Medicine, January 29, 1953. (5/5/2015).
