Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PS-2296: Navy Designs New Field Ambulance and Saves $1,670 Per Unit. The Surgeon General of the Navy, Rear Admiral Lamont Pugh, MC, USN, announced today that a contract for 281 newly established ambulances has been awarded to the Fargo Motor Corporation of Detroit, Michigan. To avoid drawing on the Army’s supply of field ambulances, the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, with technical assistance by the Bureau of Yards and Docks, drew up specifications for an ambulance utilizing readily available commercial chassis, thereby saving approximately $1,670 per unit. The contract was let through the Army Ordnance Tank Automotive Center, Detroit, Michigan, in charge of purchasing all automotive equipment for the Armed Forces. Photograph released October 22, 1951.
