Title |
2nd century plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy brooch of Roman date. Plate brooch probably dating from the 2nd century AD. The plate is roughly the shape of a lozenge but has slightly rounded sides. It measures 21.9mm high by 20.4mm across and 1.2mm thick. At the centre is a circular depression containing a raised ring and, at the very centre of the plate, a small circular hole. This depression would originally have held a glass or enamel inset. The upper three corners of the plate are each decorated with a lug. The foot extends downwards from the bottom corner of the plate and tapers slightly from top to bottom. It has three raised transverse ridges near the top and the base of the foot is decorated with a further moulded knob. The pin attachment is situated at the top of the reverse and consists of two parallel lugs set at right angles to the plate and with a gap in between. The catchplate is small and rectangular and is located at the base of the foot. The pin is missing. Overall, the brooch measures 30mm high and weighs 2.76g. Its upper-surface has traces of tinning or silvering. |
