2nd century plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy brooch of Roman date. Plate brooch, dating from the early 2nd century AD. The object is of a cruciform design. It has a high arched bow with a horizontal rectangular panel on the upper (display) side. This panel is decorated with two rows of four red enamelled triangles, one row pointing upwards, the other row down. Either side of this panel is a simple decorative "acorn like" moulding consisting of a rounded knob and a single vertical ridge. The remainder of the bow is formed by two arms of equal proportions and decoration, which extend at right angles from the central point of the horizontal central panel. Each of these arms has a narrow waist section between two decorative beaded horizontal ridges. The ends are finished off with a further "acorn like" moulding (top one slightly damaged). The hinge is located at the top and consists of twin lugs with the attached remnant of a copper-alloy pin. The catchplate is at the bottom and is slightly bent. The object measures 31.5mm high by 24.8mm wide and 11.3mm deep. It weighs 6.02g. |
